It was made popular in hip-hop the culture. The mixture is addictive, destructive, and potentially deadly. Codeine promethazine cough syrup is available by prescription only and, when used as specified, it’s an effective cough suppressant. However, it’s abused because it produces mild euphoric effects as well. Also known as sizzurp, purple jelly, and Texas tea. Purple Drank slows brain functioning and impairs motor skills. In excess, it slows the respiratory system and may cause cardiac arrest and seizures.

The short-term, Purple Drank causes slowed and slurred speech, a loss of coordination, and drowsiness. In the long-term, the beverage causes damage to the central nervous system and the brain, addiction, and death.

While it is legal to possess codeine promethazine cough syrup with a prescription, it’s still illegal to use it to make Purple Drank. Death can occur with just one use, making it more risky than rewarding for those who are abusing it.
